Propagation Troubleshooting: Why Your Cutting Failed
Find your symptom below. Nearly every propagation failure traces back to one of six causes, and most are fixable on the next attempt.
Start here: the six causes of almost every failure
- No node on the cutting — the single most common cause. Nothing will root without one.
- Rot from too much moisture — soggy soil, stale water, or no callusing.
- Drying out — the opposite problem, usually from low humidity while the cutting has no roots to draw water.
- Wrong method for the plant — trying cuttings on a fern, palm, or bulb.
- Wrong season — cutting a dormant plant in midwinter.
- Impatience — 36 plants on this site are simply slow, and a firm cutting that's done nothing for two months is often still working.
Symptom: nothing has rooted after weeks or months
First check: is there a node? A node is the small bump on the stem where a leaf attaches. A leaf with a bare stalk has none and will never root, no matter how healthy it looks or how long you wait.
This affects Pothos, Monstera, Philodendron, Swiss Cheese Vine, Mini Monstera, Hoya, Satin Pothos, and Fiddle Leaf Fig most often — and it's the reason the single-leaf Sweetheart Hoya sold at Valentine's Day stays a leaf forever.
If there is a node, the plant may simply be slow. These 36 plants are known slow rooters — a firm, unblemished cutting is still viable:

The ZZ Plant is the extreme case: a leaf cutting builds an underground tuber before it can push up a shoot, which takes 3–9 months with nothing visible happening. Gently unearth one — a firm pale tuber means it's working.
Third possibility: wrong method. Ferns, palms, bulbs, orchids, and clumping plants like Peace Lily and Calathea cannot be propagated from stem cuttings at all. Check the plant's own page.
Symptom: the cutting turned black, soft, or mushy
This is rot, and it has three distinct causes depending on the plant.
In water — stale water or submerged leaves
Any leaf below the waterline decays and takes the stem with it. Strip every lower leaf and change the water weekly. Cloudy or smelly water means it's overdue.
In soil — mix too dense or too wet
Cuttings need a fast-draining medium. Add perlite or bark to standard potting mix for aroids; use a sandy mix for lavender, rosemary, and other woody Mediterranean plants, which rot readily in ordinary soil.
In succulents — no callusing
The defining failure of this whole group. A fresh cut on a water-filled plant, pushed straight into damp soil, rots before it roots. The cutting turns yellow, translucent, and mushy within days.
Let cuts dry until they look matte instead of wet — 1–3 days for thin leaves, up to 10 days for cactus pads and thick sap-bleeding stems. Then wait another week after planting before the first watering.
These 32 plants are tagged rot-prone. All need callusing and sparse water:

Two more rot cases worth naming: Lithops and Split Rock rot at the seedling stage more easily than any other plants here — err dry at every stage. And carnivorous plants (Venus Flytrap, Sundew, Nepenthes) rot from tap water minerals; use distilled or rainwater only.
Symptom: the cutting wilted, crisped, or dropped its leaves
The opposite problem. With no roots yet, the cutting loses water through its leaves faster than it can take any up.
Fixes: - Tent a clear plastic bag loosely over the cutting to hold humidity.
- Reduce leaf area — remove lower leaves, and cut very large leaves in half crosswise (standard practice for Fiddle Leaf Fig and Hydrangea).
- Keep out of direct sun, which accelerates water loss.
- Move quickly from cut to water or soil. Soft-stemmed herbs like basil wilt within minutes of being cut.
Plants where humidity is non-negotiable: Fiddle Leaf Fig, Croton, Zebra Plant (Aphelandra), Nepenthes, Maidenhair Fern, Nerve Plant, Gardenia, Lipstick Plant, Goldfish Plant.
Maidenhair Fern is the extreme: its fronds can crisp within hours of division. Cover it immediately.
Symptom: it rooted in water, then collapsed after potting
A genuinely common and frustrating one. Water roots are thinner and more fragile than soil roots, and they don't transition automatically.
- Pot at 2–3 inches of root, not when the jar is full of them.
- Keep soil consistently moist for the first two weeks, then taper to normal watering.
Symptom: it rooted, but no new growth ever came
Usually normal. Roots come first; top growth follows, sometimes weeks later. Bright indirect light and warmth speed it up.
Specific cases:
- Succulent leaf cuttings — roots appear well before the tiny rosette.
- Snake plant leaf sections — roots in 3–6 weeks, the pup in another 2–3 months.
- Hoya — often roots long before it pushes any new leaf.
- Cane cuttings (Dracaena, Yucca) — shoots emerge from dormant buds on their own schedule.
Symptom: the new plant lost its variegation or color
Three different things get confused here.
Snake plant reverting to plain green — expected. Variegation in Dracaena trifasciata lives in outer leaf tissue that leaf cuttings don't carry through. Divide instead to keep it.
Philodendron Birkin or Pink Princess going solid green — genetic reversion, not a care mistake. Cut back to well-variegated growth; reverted sections tend to stay green.
Tradescantia, Purple Heart, or Coleus fading — this one is fixable. Their color depends on bright light, not propagation. Move them brighter.
And the opposite, worth knowing: Ficus variegation is genetic and passes reliably to cuttings, unlike snake plant. Same for Coleus and Polka Dot Plant leaf patterns.
Symptom: the division wilted or died
Almost always one cause: not enough roots for the amount of leaf.
Every division needs both growth points and its own roots. A fan of leaves with no roots attached will die. If a division is root-light, trim back some leaves to reduce the demand while it reestablishes.
Tuber and bulb divisions need an eye — a growth bud. Dahlia, potato, canna, and iris sections without one will never sprout.
Palms are the exception that surprises people. A multi-stem Areca or Kentia palm is usually several separate plants grown together, not one divisible clump. Separating stems that don't have independent root systems kills them.
These plants sulk visibly after division even when fine: Calathea, Stromanthe, Ctenanthe, Prayer Plant, and Maidenhair Fern. Curled leaves and browned edges mean humidity dropped — tent them for a couple of weeks.
Symptom: mold or fungus on the cutting
Too humid with no airflow, common under a humidity cover. Crack the cover open daily for ventilation. Remove affected material. Use fresh, clean medium.
The 22 genuinely difficult plants
These are tagged finicky. If one of these failed, it may not be anything you did — success rates are inherently mixed:

Take several cuttings of these rather than one, and expect partial success. For Rose, Lavender, and Blueberry that's standard even for experienced growers.
For the fruit trees on that list, the honest answer is different: apple, pear, peach, and cherry resist cuttings because they're meant to be grafted. No technique adjustment fixes that.
When it isn't a failure at all
- The original succulent leaf shriveled — it's being consumed by the new plant. That's the process finishing.
- One lower leaf yellowed on a water cutting — stored energy being spent.
- A snake plant or ZZ cutting has done nothing for two months — normal.
- An Alocasia dropped all its leaves after division — this genus goes dormant under stress. A firm corm usually resprouts.
- A bleeding heart vanished in summer — natural summer dormancy.
- Your apple seedling grew a different apple — expected, and unavoidable from seed.
