How to Propagate Prickly Pear

Prickly pear propagates from a single pad. The pad must callus for at least a week before touching soil — skip this and it rots almost every time. Wear thick gloves; the fine hair-like spines (glochids) are worse than the large spines.
Stem cutting (pads)
- Twist a healthy pad free at a natural joint, using tongs or thick gloves.
- Let it sit in a dry, shaded spot for 7–10 days until the cut end fully calluses and looks dry.
- Stand the pad upright, an inch or two deep, in dry cactus mix.
- Don’t water for another week. Then water sparingly, only when the mix is fully dry.
When to propagate
Spring through summer.
Common problems
The pad rotted. Didn’t callus long enough, or watered too soon. Wait the full week before planting and another week before the first watering.
Glochids got in my skin. Use tongs or thick gloves and tweezers to remove any that stick.
Questions people ask
Can I plant a pad sideways? Yes, either upright or laid flat works, as long as the calloused end has soil contact.
