Water Propagation: The Complete Guide

Rooting a cutting in a jar of water is the most popular way to propagate houseplants, and for good reason: it costs nothing, needs no equipment, and you can watch the roots appear. 46 of the 225 plants on this site can be propagated in water. They're all listed further down.

But water propagation is not universally better, and it's genuinely wrong for some plants. This page covers when to use it, exactly how, and — just as important — when to reach for soil instead.


The one rule that decides everything: find the node

Almost every water-propagation failure comes down to a single mistake: the cutting had no node.

A node is the small bump or joint on a stem where a leaf attaches. Sometimes there's already a stubby brown root nub there. That bump contains the tissue that becomes roots. A leaf with a bare stalk and no node has none — it can sit in a jar looking perfectly healthy for six months and will never grow into a plant.

This is why the single-leaf Monstera in a bud vase never becomes a Monstera, and why the heart-shaped Hoya leaf sold at Valentine's Day stays a leaf forever.

Before you cut: look for the bump. Cut about ¼ inch below it.


How to propagate in water — the method

  1. Take the cutting. 4–6 inches of stem, cut cleanly about ¼ inch below a node. One to three leaves is ideal; more leaves means more water demand before there are roots to supply it.
  2. Strip the lower leaves. Any leaf that would sit below the waterline comes off. Submerged leaves rot, foul the water, and take the stem with them. This is the second most common failure after the missing node.
  3. Submerge the node, not the leaves. Use a clear glass or jar so you can monitor progress. Room-temperature water.
  4. Bright indirect light. Not direct sun — it overheats the water and encourages algae.
  5. Change the water weekly. Fresh water carries oxygen; stagnant water breeds the bacteria that turn stems black and mushy.
  6. Pot when roots are 2–3 inches long. Not 6+. Long water roots are brittle and transplant badly.

The transition to soil — where people lose plants that already rooted

Water roots and soil roots are structurally different. Water roots are thinner, more fragile, and adapted to constant moisture. Move a cutting with long water roots into normal soil and it can wilt or collapse.

When water is the wrong choice

Water propagation is popular enough that people try it on plants it actively harms. Use soil instead for:

The trailing string succulents (String of Pearls, String of Hearts, String of Bananas, String of Dolphins) are a partial exception — they can root in water, but laying them on dry soil is more reliable and transitions far better.


Common problems

Nothing has rooted after a month. Check for a node. This is the cause roughly every time.

The stem turned black and slimy. Bacterial rot from stale water or submerged leaves. Change the water weekly and keep every leaf above the surface.

The water turned cloudy or smells. Same cause. Rinse the cutting, wash the jar, and refill.

Roots grew, then the plant collapsed after potting. The transition problem above — pot earlier and keep the soil evenly moist for two weeks.

Green algae on the glass. Too much direct light. Move to indirect light; it's unsightly but not usually fatal.

One lower leaf yellowed. Normal — the cutting is spending stored energy. Several yellowing at once means light or water problems.


Can plants live in water permanently?

Yes, several can. Pothos, Lucky Bamboo, Tradescantia, mint, and basil will grow in water indefinitely. They'll grow more slowly and stay smaller than their potted counterparts, because plain water contains no nutrients — add a couple of drops of liquid fertilizer monthly if you're keeping one long-term.
