The leafy top of a store-bought pineapple can be rooted into a new plant. Removing enough of the fruit flesh from the base is the key step — any leftover flesh rots and takes the crown down with it.
Offsets (crown)
- Twist the leafy crown off the top of the fruit.
- Remove the lowest 1–2 inches of leaves to expose the stem base.
- Trim away any remaining fruit flesh, and let the base dry for 1–2 days.
- Suspend over water (toothpick method, like avocado) or plant directly in well-draining mix, burying the bare stem base.
- Keep warm and bright.
Roots form in 4–8 weeks.
