Coffee plants root slowly from stem cuttings and even more slowly from seed. Fresh seed (unroasted, of course) germinates far better than older seed if attempting that route.
Stem cutting
- Cut a 4–5 inch semi-hardwood section with a node.
- Dip in rooting hormone.
- Insert into moist, well-draining mix; cover for humidity.
Growing from seed
Use fresh, raw (unroasted) seed; germination takes 1–3 months even under good conditions.
When to propagate
Spring and summer, in consistent warmth.
Common problems
Cutting sat for weeks with no roots. Normal — this is a genuinely slow rooter. Maintain humidity and warmth and be patient.
Questions people ask
Will my indoor plant ever produce coffee beans? Possible after several years of maturity and the right conditions, though it’s uncommon for home- grown plants to fruit reliably indoors.
Is it toxic to pets? Yes, mildly — the leaves and beans contain caffeine, which is toxic to cats and dogs in enough quantity. Ordinary handling for propagation isn’t a concern.
