Echinocactus grusonii

Methods Seed, offsets
Difficulty Intermediate
Best season Spring–summer
Time to root Instant (offsets)
Group Cactus

Golden barrel rarely produces offsets when young, but mature plants sometimes do at the base. Offsets, when available, are far easier than seed — this species is slow from seed even by cactus standards.

Offsets

Separate any offsets forming at the base with a clean cut, let callus about a week, pot in dry cactus mix.

Growing from seed

Sow on the surface of well-draining mix; germination is slow, often taking weeks to months, and growth afterward is very slow.

When to propagate

Spring and summer.

Common problems

Offset rotted. Didn’t callus long enough — extend drying time for this thick-bodied cactus.

Questions people ask

Why is my golden barrel not producing offsets? Most mature specimens simply don’t offset readily; it’s not something you can reliably force.
