Venus flytraps can be divided at the rhizome or grown from leaf cuttings that include a bit of the underground stem. Use distilled or rainwater only — tap water minerals harm this plant more than almost any other on this list, propagation included.
Division
Separate rhizome sections during repotting (usually after a winter dormancy), each with roots and traps attached.
Leaf cutting
Pull a leaf cleanly from the rhizome, including the white base. Lay on moist, mineral-free sphagnum moss or peat, keep humid.
When to propagate
Spring, coming out of winter dormancy.
Common problems
Cutting or division rotted. Tap water minerals or a non-carnivorous-plant soil mix are the most common causes — use distilled water and pure sphagnum peat.
Questions people ask
Do I need to feed the new plant insects? Not immediately — a young plant gets enough energy from photosynthesis and can start catching prey once established.
