Soil & Cutting Methods: Every Way to Propagate a Plant

Water rooting gets the attention, but most plants are propagated another way. This page covers all eleven soil-based and non-water methods used across the 225 plants on this site, what each one is for, and which plants use it.

Start here if you don't know which method your plant needs β€” the wrong method is the most common reason propagation fails outright. A fern won't root from a cutting. A palm can't be divided. An apple tree from seed won't give you the apple you started with.

Stem cutting β€” 146 plants

The most common method on this site by a wide margin. A section of stem, cut below a node, planted in soil.

The rules are the same as water propagation with one addition: the soil must drain well. A dense, water-retentive mix rots the cut end before roots form. Standard potting mix works for most houseplants; add perlite or bark for aroids, and sand for woody or Mediterranean plants like lavender and rosemary.

Method: Cut 4–6 inches below a node. Strip the lower leaves. Dip in rooting hormone if the plant is a slow or difficult rooter. Bury the node about an inch deep in moist mix. Keep lightly damp β€” never soggy. Cover loosely with a clear bag for plants that wilt easily.

Softwood, semi-hardwood, hardwood. For woody plants, when you cut matters as much as how:


Division β€” 81 plants

Splitting an established plant into multiple rooted plants. The fastest method on this site: a division is a finished plant the moment you pot it, with no rooting period at all.

Used for anything that grows as a clump of stems from a shared root mass, or from a spreading underground rhizome or tuber.

Method: Remove the plant from its pot or dig it up. Loosen the roots and look for natural separations. Pull apart by hand where possible; cut with a clean blade where roots are tangled. Every division must have both leaves (or growth buds) and its own roots β€” this is the rule people break, and a division without roots simply dies.

Plants where division is the only option: Peace Lily, Calathea, Stromanthe, Ctenanthe, Boston Fern, Cast Iron Plant, Hosta, Astilbe, Bearded Iris, Peony, Canna Lily, Elephant Ear, Bird of Paradise.

Bulbs, tubers, rhizomes, and corms are a special case of division. Each piece must carry a growth point β€” called an "eye" on a dahlia or potato, a bud on a canna or iris rhizome. A tuber section without an eye will never sprout no matter how healthy it looks.


Leaf cutting β€” 24 plants

A single leaf grows an entire new plant. Feels like magic, and works on a specific and limited set of plants.

Three distinct versions:

Snake plant warning that belongs here: leaf cuttings from a variegated snake plant produce plain green plants. The yellow edges don't carry through. Divide instead if you want to keep the variegation.


Offsets and pups β€” 33 plants

The plant makes a baby; you separate it. The easiest category on this site, because most of the work is already done.

The only real judgment is when: separate too early and the pup has no roots of its own and dies. The general rule is to wait until the pup is roughly a third the size of the parent, or until it has visible roots.

Includes spider plant plantlets, aloe and agave pups, bromeliad and pineapple crowns, orchid keiki, banana suckers, strawberry runners, Chinese money plant babies, Mother of Thousands plantlets, and bulb offsets on daffodil, tulip, amaryllis, and lily.


Layering β€” 20 plants

Root a stem while it's still attached to the parent. The parent keeps feeding it, so there's no risk of the cutting drying out β€” which makes this the highest-success method for plants that root poorly from cuttings.

Method: Bend a low, flexible branch to the ground. Wound the underside lightly where it will meet the soil. Bury that section a few inches deep, pinning it if needed, leaving the tip exposed. Keep moist. Once rooted (weeks to a full season), cut it free.

Use it when cuttings keep failing. Wisteria, magnolia, and lilac are all notably easier this way. Blackberry and raspberry do it themselves via tip layering; thyme and creeping plants often self-layer where stems touch soil.


Air layering β€” 17 plants

The same idea, done in mid-air on a plant with no low branches. This is the method for a tall leggy houseplant you want to shorten and propagate at the same time.

Method: Choose a spot on the stem. Cut a ring of bark about an inch wide right around it and remove the strip. Blot any sap. Dust with rooting hormone. Pack damp sphagnum moss around the wound, wrap in plastic, tie both ends. Keep the moss damp. Roots fill the moss in 4–10 weeks. Cut below the roots and pot.

Best for: Fiddle Leaf Fig, Rubber Plant, Ficus Audrey, Monstera, Croton, Magnolia, Japanese Maple, Umbrella Plant, citrus.


Cane cutting β€” 5 plants

A bare woody stem, cut into sections, sprouts new shoots from dormant buds. Surprises everyone the first time. A leafless chunk of stem laid on its side in soil grows a whole plant.

Used for Dracaena and its relatives: Corn Plant, Dragon Tree, Song of India, Dieffenbachia, Yucca. Cut 4–6 inch sections, let the ends dry a day, lay them half-buried horizontally or stand them upright in moist mix.


Seed β€” 42 plants

Necessary when nothing else works. For most plants on this site seed is the slow option, but for some it's the only one.

Seed-only plants here: Cilantro (its taproot won't tolerate rooting or transplanting), Kentia Palm, Parlor Palm, Norfolk Island Pine.

The honest caveat that applies to fruit and named varieties: seed does not reproduce the parent. An apple seed grows a different, usually worse apple. Citrus, peach, cherry, and pear are the same. Named cultivars of coneflower, Japanese maple, and shasta daisy don't come true either. If you want the same plant, use cuttings, division, or grafting.


Grafting β€” 11 plants

Joining a cutting from a known variety onto another plant's roots. This is how essentially every fruit tree you can buy was made.

It's a real skill with its own tools and timing, distinct from everything else on this page, and most home growers reasonably choose to buy an already-grafted tree instead. It appears on this site for apple, pear, peach, cherry, plum, citrus, Japanese maple, and desert rose so you know why those plants resist ordinary cuttings β€” not as a step-by-step recommendation.


Spores β€” 3 plants

Ferns only. Ferns don't make seeds; they release dust-like spores from the brown patches on the undersides of their fronds.

Sowing them requires sterile conditions and months of patience, with a low success rate even done well. It's a genuine specialty project. For Staghorn Fern, take offsets instead. For Bird's Nest Fern there unfortunately isn't an easier option, which is why that plant is marked advanced.


Root cutting β€” 2 plants

A section of root grows a new plant. Uncommon and little-known, but it works: cut a 2–3 inch piece of root, lay it horizontally about an inch deep in moist soil, and shoots emerge from it.

The four rules that apply to every method

  1. Use clean, sharp tools. Crushed tissue and transferred bacteria are avoidable causes of failure.
  2. Match the moisture to the plant. Succulents and Mediterranean herbs want dry; tropical foliage wants evenly moist; nothing wants soggy.
  3. Callus anything that bleeds. Succulents, cacti, and any plant with milky sap need days of drying before they touch soil. Skipping this is the number one cause of rot.
