How to Propagate Purple Heart
Tradescantia pallida · Also called Purple Queen
| Methods | Stem cutting, water |
| Difficulty | Beginner |
| Best season | Spring–summer |
| Time to root | 1–2 weeks |
| Group | Houseplant |
A close relative of Tradescantia zebrina, propagated identically and just as quickly. Cuttings root in water within a week or two, and multiple cuttings potted together fill in fast.
Water propagation
Cut below a node, strip lower leaves, place in water, bright light for best color. Change the water weekly.
When to propagate
Spring through summer.
Common problems
Color faded to green. Needs brighter light — the purple pigment depends heavily on strong light exposure.
Questions people ask
Does it need direct sun to stay purple? Some direct sun genuinely helps maintain the deep purple color, more than most houseplants tolerate.
