Group Outdoor / garden

Sweet potatoes grow new plants from “slips” — small shoots that sprout from the tuber, each of which can be rooted separately. Suspending the whole tuber in water is the classic way to sprout slips, similar to the avocado method.

Water propagation (slips)

  1. Insert toothpicks around the middle of a sweet potato and suspend it over a glass of water, half submerged.
  2. Keep warm and bright; change water weekly.
  3. Slips (small shoots with leaves) sprout from the top in a few weeks.
  4. Once slips are 4–6 inches with some roots of their own, twist them off and root them separately in water or moist soil.

When to propagate

Spring, to give slips a full growing season.

Common problems

Tuber rotted before sprouting. Use a firm, unblemished tuber and change water regularly.

Questions people ask

Can I use a store-bought sweet potato? Yes, though some are treated to prevent sprouting — organic tubers sprout more reliably.
