How to Propagate Lemongrass

Cymbopogon citratus

A stalk of lemongrass from the grocery store will readily regrow roots in water, similar to green onion. Keep the root end (the swollen base) intact and submerged — the top green leaves can be trimmed back to reduce water loss while it roots.

Water propagation

1. Use a fresh stalk with its base intact.
2. Trim the leafy top back to a few inches.
3. Stand the base in a glass of water.
4. Change water every few days.

Roots appear in 1–3 weeks; plant into soil once established.

Division

Established clumps can also be dug up and divided at the base.
