How to Propagate Geranium

Geranium cuttings root well in soil but rot easily in water. Let the cut end dry for a few hours to a day before planting — this single step noticeably improves success.
Stem cutting
- Cut a 4–5 inch non-flowering stem below a node.
- Remove lower leaves and any flower buds.
- Let the cut dry 2–4 hours to overnight.
- Insert into moist, well-draining mix.
- Keep evenly moist, bright indirect light, out of direct hot sun initially.
When to propagate
Spring for outdoor planting; can also be done in late summer to overwinter plants indoors.
Common problems
Cutting rotted at the base. Skipped the drying step, or soil too wet. Dry longer next time and let the mix dry between waterings.
No roots after a month. Check the cutting is still firm; geraniums can be slower than they look while still succeeding.
Questions people ask
Do I need rooting hormone? Not required, but it can improve success rate.
