Like green onion, a celery base regrows from water — but be aware this regrows the plant, not endless usable stalks; a water-regrown base gives thin stalks best suited for a full soil transplant.
Water propagation
- Cut off the base of a celery bunch, keeping about 2 inches with the root end attached.
- Stand the base in a shallow dish of water, cut side up.
- Set in a sunny spot; change water every couple of days.
New growth sprouts from the center within a week. Transplant to soil once roots develop for a fuller plant.
When to propagate
Spring and fall for outdoor growing; can be started indoors any time.
Common problems
The base rotted instead of regrowing. Change water frequently and don’t submerge the whole base — only the bottom.
Questions people ask
Will this give me full-size celery stalks? Not directly from water alone — transplanting into soil after initial regrowth produces much better stalks.
