The classic kitchen-scrap regrow. Keep about an inch of the white root base intact when you use the green onion, and it will regrow from that same base repeatedly.
Water propagation
- After using the green tops, keep the white root end with roots attached.
- Stand it in a shallow glass of water, roots submerged.
- Set on a windowsill; change water every couple of days.
New green growth appears within days, harvestable again in 1–2 weeks. This can be repeated several times before the base runs out of energy — transplant to soil for longer-term regrowth.

The base rotted instead of regrowing. Change the water more frequently and make sure only the roots and base sit in water.
Questions people ask
How many times can I regrow the same base? Usually 2–4 times before it weakens — moving it to soil after the first regrowth extends its life considerably.
Is it toxic to pets? Yes — green onion is part of the same toxic-to-pets onion family, even though it’s safe for people. Keep the regrowing base out of reach of cats and dogs.
