Blackberry canes root wherever their tips touch soil, a natural process called tip layering. This is easier and more reliable than cuttings — simply bend a cane tip to the ground and let it root itself.
Layering (tip layering)
- In summer, bend a long cane tip down to touch the soil.
- Bury the tip 2–3 inches deep, pinning if needed.
- Roots form over 4–8 weeks.
- Cut the new plant free from the parent cane once established.
Division
Dig up and separate rooted suckers from the base of an established plant.

Summer through fall.
