Hosta is one of the easiest perennials to divide, tolerating even a fairly rough split. A shovel driven straight through an established clump is a perfectly acceptable division method — this plant is remarkably forgiving.
Division
- Dig up the clump, or cut straight through part of it with a sharp spade.
- Separate into sections, each with a few growth points (“eyes”) and roots.
- Replant at the original depth.
When to propagate
Spring, as new growth emerges, or fall after the season slows.
Common problems
Divided section wilted temporarily. Normal transplant shock — water well and it typically recovers within a couple of weeks.
