Umbrella plant roots reliably from stem cuttings, but woody, mature stems can be slow. Younger, still-flexible growth roots noticeably faster than older woody stems.
Which method should you use?
Stem cuttings for younger growth. Air layering for a tall, leggy, mature plant you want to shorten.
Stem cutting
- Cut a 5–6 inch section of newer, still-flexible growth with 2–3 leaves.
- Dip in rooting hormone.
- Insert into moist, well-draining mix.
- Bright indirect light, cover loosely for humidity.
Air layering
Wound the stem, wrap with damp moss and plastic, wait 6–8 weeks for roots, then cut and pot.
When to propagate
Spring and summer.
Common problems
The cutting dropped its leaves. Low humidity — use a plastic cover.
Woody cutting won’t root. Switch to younger growth or use air layering instead.
