How to Propagate Dieffenbachia

Dieffenbachia seguine · Also called Dumb Cane

Like corn plant, Dieffenbachia can be propagated from bare cane sections as well as leafy tip cuttings. Handle cuttings with gloves — the sap is notably irritating and gives the plant its common name from the temporary numbness it can cause if it contacts the mouth.

Cane cutting

Cut leafless woody sections, lay half-buried in moist mix; new shoots emerge from buds along the cane.

Stem cutting

Cut a leafy tip section including a node, root in moist soil with humidity.

When to propagate

Spring through summer.

Cutting rotted. Too wet — keep the mix lightly moist, not soggy.

Is it dangerous to handle? Handling it for propagation is fine with basic care — wear gloves and wash hands after cutting.
