How to Propagate Staghorn Fern
Platycerium bifurcatum
| Methods | Offsets, spores |
| Difficulty | Intermediate |
| Best season | Spring–summer |
| Time to root | 4–8 weeks (offsets) |
| Group | Houseplant |
Staghorn ferns produce small offset pups (called “pups”) at the base of the main plant, and separating these is far more reliable than growing from spores. Spore propagation is possible but genuinely difficult and slow, best left to enthusiasts — most people should stick to offsets.
Offsets
- Locate a pup growing from the base of the mount or main plant.
- Carefully separate it with a sharp knife, keeping some of the fibrous root mat attached.
- Mount the pup on a board with sphagnum moss, or pot in a well-draining orchid-style mix.
- Keep humidity high while it establishes.
When to propagate
Spring through summer.
Common problems
Pup struggled after separation. Not enough of the root mat came with it — try to include as much as possible next time.
Questions people ask
Can I really grow this from spores? Yes, but it requires sterile technique and months of patience; it’s a specialty method most home growers skip in favor of offsets.
