Elephant ear grows from underground corms that naturally produce offset corms alongside the main one. Separating these offset corms is the only reliable propagation method — leaves alone have no capacity to grow roots.
Division (corms)
- Remove the plant from its pot or dig it up.
- Find smaller offset corms attached to or near the main corm.
- Separate them by hand or with a clean cut.
- Let cut surfaces dry a day if separated with a knife.
- Pot in moist, well-draining mix.
When to propagate
Spring through summer, during active growth.

Corm rotted after potting. Too wet — let the mix dry between waterings until new growth is established.
