Raspberry spreads via underground suckers, which makes division the easiest method by far. Dig up a sucker with its own roots rather than trying to cut canes — canes themselves root poorly compared to rooted suckers.
Division
- Locate a sucker (a new cane growing from the spreading root system) some distance from the main plant.
- Dig it up, keeping roots intact.
- Transplant immediately to its new location.
Layering
Cane tips can also be layered like blackberry, bent to the ground and buried until rooted.
When to propagate
Summer through fall for suckers; anytime canes are dormant works too.
Common problems
Transplanted sucker wilted. Keep it well watered for the first couple of weeks while new roots establish in place.
