How to Propagate Potato

Potatoes grow from pieces of tuber, each with at least one “eye” (a small bud). Let cut pieces dry and callus for a couple of days before planting — this reduces rot significantly compared to planting immediately after cutting.

Division (seed potato eyes)

1. Cut a potato into pieces, each with at least one eye, roughly egg-sized.
2. Let the cut pieces dry at room temperature for 1–2 days until the cut surface calluses over.
3. Plant a few inches deep in loose soil, eye facing up.

Shoots emerge in 2–4 weeks.

When to propagate

Early spring, after the last frost risk has mostly passed.

Common problems

Pieces rotted in the ground. Didn’t callus long enough, or soil too wet. Let cuts dry fully and plant in well-draining soil.

Can I use a grocery store potato? Yes, though “seed potatoes” from a garden store are certified disease-free and generally more reliable.
