How to Propagate Ginger
Zingiber officinale
| Methods | Division (rhizome) |
| Difficulty | Beginner |
| Best season | Spring |
| Time to root | 2–4 weeks to sprout |
| Group | Herb |
A piece of ginger root from the grocery store can grow a whole new plant. Choose a piece with visible “eyes” — small bumps where new shoots will emerge — the same principle as growing potatoes.
Division (rhizome)
- Cut or break off a 1–2 inch piece of ginger root with at least one visible eye/bud.
- Let the cut surface dry for a day if freshly cut.
- Plant shallowly, eye facing up, in moist, well-draining potting mix.
- Keep warm and consistently moist.
Shoots emerge in 2–4 weeks.
When to propagate
Spring, for a full growing season before harvest.
Common problems
Piece rotted instead of sprouting. Often store-bought ginger has been treated with a growth inhibitor. Try organic ginger, which sprouts more reliably.
Questions people ask
Why won’t my grocery store ginger sprout? Conventionally grown ginger is often treated to prevent sprouting during storage — organic ginger has much better odds.
