Chinese evergreen tolerates low light better than almost any houseplant, and it propagates just as easily. Division is fastest since mature plants naturally form multiple stems from the base; stem cuttings work too, just slower.
Division
- Remove the plant from its pot and find natural stem clusters at the base.
- Separate by hand or cut with a clean blade, keeping roots with each stem.
- Pot each division in fresh mix at its original depth.
Stem cutting
- Cut a stem section with at least one node.
- Root in water or moist soil; keep warm and in indirect light.
Roots form in 3–5 weeks.
When to propagate
Spring and summer, though this plant tolerates propagation timing better than most.
Common problems
A cutting rotted in soil. Overwatering. Let the mix dry between waterings.
