Agave spreads by producing offsets, called “pups,” around its base. Wait until a pup has grown a noticeable rosette of its own leaves before separating it — very small pups often lack enough root development to survive separation.
Offsets
- Dig around the base to find where the pup connects to the parent’s roots.
- Cut it free with a clean blade, keeping as many roots as possible.
- Let the cut dry 2–3 days.
- Pot in dry, fast-draining cactus mix; don’t water for a week.

Pup rotted after potting. Not enough drying time, or watered too soon.
Questions people ask
Does agave die after flowering? Many species are monocarpic and die after their one bloom, which is why propagating pups beforehand matters if you want to keep the plant going.
Anything to watch for when handling it? The leaf tips are sharp and sometimes spine-edged — the main practical hazard here, so watch your hands and eyes when working close to the plant. The sap can also mildly irritate skin in sensitive people.
