True to the common name, the main “hen” rosette continuously produces small offset “chicks” around its base, each a complete miniature plant. Simply separating an already-rooted chick is nearly foolproof — this is one of the easiest succulents on this site to propagate.
Offsets
- Gently pull a chick away from the mother rosette, keeping any roots attached.
- Pot directly in dry succulent mix — no drying period needed if it already has roots.
- Water lightly once settled.
When to propagate
Spring and summer, though this cold-hardy succulent tolerates a wide range of timing.
Common problems
Chick has no roots. Let it sit on top of dry soil for a few days; roots typically form on their own within a couple of weeks.
