How to Propagate Currant

Ribes spp. · Also called Gooseberry

Currant and gooseberry root easily from dormant hardwood cuttings, similar to grape vine. Take cuttings after leaf drop and plant them right away outdoors — no indoor rooting setup needed.

Stem cutting (hardwood)

1. In late fall or winter, cut 8–10 inch sections of dormant, pencil-thick wood.
2. Insert two-thirds of the length into loose garden soil.
3. Leave undisturbed through winter; roots form as it warms in spring.

When to propagate

Late fall through winter, while fully dormant.

Common problems

Cutting failed to root. Ensure the wood was fully dormant (leafless) when cut, and firm the soil well around it.
